Solana developers are testing Alpenglow, an upgrade meant to cut payment finality from about 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds, CoinDesk noted Monday (Sept. 28, 2026) alongside the record SOL ETF week. The upgrade reached the network’s second public testing environment on Friday. CoinDesk stressed the speed figure remains a target and that a launch date for the live blockchain has not been announced.
Earlier coverage from 24/7 Wall St. (Sept. 25) described Alpenglow as tentatively aimed at Sept. 28: replacing TowerBFT with the Votor voting protocol, raising the offline-stake fault threshold toward 40%, and requiring about 95% of staked SOL on the new client before full activation. Anza had already been running Alpenglow code on mainnet in a non-active state since Sept. 18.
Test progress ≠ mainnet flip
Treat Monday as a testing-and-roadmap desk note, not confirmation that mainnet finality already flipped. ETF primary demand (record ~$188M week) and protocol milestones are separate lanes. Live SOL ~$117.8 Monday morning (Robinhood). Not investment advice.
